Lake Erie Terroir

Lake Erie Terroir: What Makes Wine Taste Like a Place

Terroir is one of those wine words that simply means this: where a grape grows matters.

Climate, soil, sunlight, topography, and farming practices all shape the character of a wine. Together, these factors influence everything from aroma and acidity to texture, balance, and aging potential.

At Johnson Estate Winery, terroir is not an abstract concept. It is the land outside our tasting room doors, the influence of nearby Lake Erie, and more than a century of farming experience on our family’s estate in Westfield, New York. As New York’s oldest estate winery and a third-generation family-owned farm, we have spent decades learning how this unique place expresses itself through our wines.

Whether you are enjoying a crisp Riesling, elegant Pinot Noir, traditional Concord, or one of our French-American hybrid wines, you are tasting the unique characteristics of the Lake Erie wine region.

What Is the Lake Erie AVA?

Johnson Estate Winery is located within the Lake Erie American Viticultural Area (AVA), one of the largest and most historic grape-growing regions in the United States.

An AVA is a federally recognized wine-growing region defined by unique geographic and climatic characteristics. When a wine carries an AVA designation, it tells consumers that the wine’s identity is tied to a specific place.

The Lake Erie AVA stretches across portions of New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio along the southern shoreline of Lake Erie. Today, the region contains tens of thousands of vineyard acres and has been recognized for generations as one of North America’s most important grape-growing areas.

While the region became famous for Concord grapes, modern growers have demonstrated that the Lake Erie climate is also exceptionally well suited to varieties such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Chambourcin, Traminette, and many French-American hybrids.

The Lake Erie Difference

The single greatest influence on our vineyards is Lake Erie itself.

Large bodies of water act as natural temperature regulators, absorbing heat during warm months and slowly releasing it during cooler periods. Because Lake Erie is located immediately north of our vineyards, it moderates seasonal temperature extremes throughout the year.

This influence helps:

  • Extend the growing season
  • Reduce the risk of damaging spring frosts
  • Moderate winter cold
  • Encourage gradual, even ripening
  • Preserve natural acidity in grapes

Rather than ripening quickly during hot weather, grapes along Lake Erie mature slowly and steadily. This extended ripening period allows fruit to develop greater complexity while maintaining freshness and balance. These characteristics are often considered hallmarks of the world’s finest cool-climate wine regions.

Long Summer Days and Cool Climate Excellence

One of the lesser-known advantages of the Lake Erie region is its northern latitude.

During the growing season, vineyards receive long hours of daylight that encourage photosynthesis and healthy vine development. Combined with moderate temperatures, these extended summer days help grapes achieve full flavor development without excessive sugar accumulation.

The result is wines that are known for:

  • Bright fruit character
  • Natural acidity
  • Balance and freshness
  • Food-friendly structure
  • Distinct varietal expression

These conditions are especially favorable for cool-climate varieties such as Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir, which thrive when allowed to ripen gradually over a long growing season.

The Soil Beneath Our Vines

Climate may be the most visible part of terroir, but soil plays an equally important role.

The Lake Erie region contains a mixture of sand, gravel, shale, glacial deposits, and well-drained loams formed over thousands of years. These soils encourage deep root systems while preventing excessive water retention.

At Johnson Estate, our vineyard sites were selected because they offer excellent drainage and a natural balance between vine vigor and fruit quality.

Healthy soils encourage vines to develop extensive root systems that can access water and nutrients throughout the growing season. This balance helps create grapes with concentrated flavors and consistent quality year after year.

How Lake Erie Terroir Shapes Our Wines

Riesling

Riesling is one of the world’s premier cool-climate grape varieties, and the Lake Erie region provides ideal growing conditions for its success. The moderating influence of Lake Erie allows grapes to ripen slowly while preserving the bright acidity, vibrant fruit character, and balance that make Riesling so distinctive.

Many wine experts have noted similarities between the Lake Erie region and Germany’s renowned Rhine and Mosel valleys. Both regions benefit from cool growing seasons, long summer daylight hours, and conditions that encourage gradual ripening. These shared characteristics help explain why Riesling thrives in both regions and why it has become one of Johnson Estate Winery’s signature varieties. Our winemaker, Jeff Murphy, travels regularly to Germany to study vineyard innovations and traditional winemaking techniques, bringing valuable insights back to Johnson Estate that continue to influence our Riesling program today.

At Johnson Estate Winery, we craft four distinct Rieslings that showcase the versatility of both the grape and the Lake Erie terroir. Our Sweet Riesling, Dry Riesling, Semi-Dry Riesling, and Black Locust Dry Riesling each offer a unique expression of the variety, from crisp and refreshing to richly textured and complex. Together, they demonstrate how the region’s cool climate, lake-moderated growing season, and well-drained soils create exceptional conditions for producing world-class Riesling.

Pinot Noir is highly sensitive to its growing environment, making terroir especially important. The cool climate and extended growing season provided by Lake Erie allow Pinot Noir to develop delicate aromas, balanced acidity, and refined structure without excessive ripeness.

The same moderate growing conditions that benefit Riesling also contribute to the elegance and freshness found in cool-climate Pinot Noir. At Johnson Estate, this unique terroir helps create wines that showcase bright fruit character, refined tannins, and a true sense of place.

Our success with Pinot Noir demonstrates the potential of the Lake Erie region for growing world-class cool-climate wines. The most recent vintage of Johnson Estate Pinot Noir earned two Best of Class awards, a recognition that highlights both the quality of the fruit grown in our estate vineyards and the exceptional growing conditions found along the shores of Lake Erie. These accolades reinforce what we have long believed: Lake Erie terroir provides an outstanding environment for producing expressive, award-winning Pinot Noir.

Chardonnay responds exceptionally well to the balanced growing conditions of the Lake Erie region. Warm summer days, cool evenings, and an extended growing season allow grapes to develop complex flavors while retaining natural acidity.

This balance produces Chardonnays that are fresh, expressive, and food-friendly, reflecting both the variety and the unique climate of the Lake Erie AVA. At Johnson Estate Winery, we showcase this versatility through two distinct Chardonnay styles. Our Bright Steel Chardonnay highlights the crisp fruit character, vibrant acidity, and freshness that are hallmarks of cool-climate winemaking, while our Toasted Oak Chardonnay offers added richness and complexity from careful barrel aging. Together, these wines demonstrate how Lake Erie terroir provides an exceptional foundation for crafting both unoaked and oak-aged Chardonnay.

Unlike many of the grape varieties grown at Johnson Estate that trace their heritage to classic European wine regions, Maréchal Foch is a French-American hybrid grape. It was developed in France in the early 1900s by grape breeder Eugène Kuhlmann and later named in honor of French Marshal Ferdinand Foch.

Although it originated in France, Maréchal Foch found its greatest success in the cool-climate growing regions of North America. Its natural cold hardiness, early ripening, and adaptability make it exceptionally well suited to the Lake Erie region.

The moderating influence of Lake Erie allows Maréchal Foch to develop deep color, vibrant fruit character, and balanced structure while maintaining the freshness that defines cool-climate wines.

At Johnson Estate Winery, Maréchal Foch has become our number one selling wine, a longtime favorite that showcases how the unique terroir of Lake Erie Wine Country can produce exceptional wines from grape varieties that thrive in northern growing conditions.

For generations, Concord and Niagara grapes have been closely associated with the Lake Erie region. The area’s fertile soils, lake-moderated climate, and long growing season helped establish it as one of North America’s most important grape-growing regions.

This region also played a defining role in the development of the American grape juice industry. Westfield, New York was once the headquarters of Welch’s, founded in the late 19th century, which helped transform Concord grapes into a national staple. At its peak, the Lake Erie grape belt supplied a significant portion of the nation’s Concord grape harvest, supporting both juice production and processing industries that became central to the local economy.

While much of the region’s early commercial production focused on juice grapes, Concord and Niagara remain an important part of Lake Erie’s agricultural heritage. Over time, winemakers in the region have demonstrated that these traditional varieties can also produce expressive, high-quality wines when grown and vinified with care in the right terroir.

At Johnson Estate Winery, this evolution is reflected in our estate-grown expressions of both varieties. Our 2024 Niagara was awarded Best of Class, Gold, and 99 Points at the Los Angeles International Wine Competition, offering a sweet white wine with a fresh, fruity grape character and vibrant aromatic intensity. Our 2024 Concord also earned Best of Class, Gold, and 95 Points, showcasing a sweet, deeply flavored wine with rich grape character, silky texture, and a true expression of the variety.

Together, these wines highlight the enduring relationship between Lake Erie and viticulture, demonstrating how the region’s terroir supports both its historic grape heritage and its continued ability to produce award-winning wines.
